Youth Peace Prize Australia

The Youth Peace Prize Australia is proposed to promote peace and peaceful conflict resolution amongst the youth of Australia.

  • In 2005 there were 1164 assaults in NSW schools. 143 of these involved weapons.

  • In the past two years there have been street fights in Macquarie Fields, Redfern, Cronulla, Maroubra and in remote  Indigenous towns.

  • There were 24,700 reported domestic violence assaults in NSW in the 12 months to September 2006

ARE WE ACTUALLY DEVELOPING THE SOCIETY WE WANT FOR OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN?

The YPPA challenges the notion that Peacemaking is too hard.

Edmund Burke said “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

It is our duty to teach positive values to our youth. Equality, the value of the individual, respect for others, responsibility for actions.

It is our duty to encourage youth to think for themselves and to question mainstream values, e.g. drunkenness is good, promoting oneself by ridiculing others especially those who are different, wealth brings happiness.

What if young people were shown they have the potential to create the kind of community they choose?

What if young people were to reject hatred, greed and dishonesty?

Young people have the power and creativity to communicate these messages to their peers much more effectively than traditional methods.

The YPPA provides incentives for peace as opposed to punishment for violence. It is fresh, innovative and has enormous potential for change.
